CUT001-2: Middle of Tibet

 

Introduction

Sun radiation is extremely strong in Tibet. The sunlight in Lhasa is so intense that the city is called Sunlight City. The thin air can neither block off nor retain heat so that the temperature extremes can be met in daytime and the same night respectively in Tibet. However it is not impossible to visit the holy snow land. May, June and September are the tourism season in east Tibet.

 

 

Middle of Tibet

Also known as the Lamaism, the Tibetan Buddhism was introduced to Tibet from the mainland and India in the seventh century. The Tibetan Buddhism consists of four major sects, the Ge-lug-pa(Yellow) Sect, the Nying-ma-pa(Red)Sec, the Saturday-kya-pa(Variegated) Sect, and the Ka-gyu-pa(White) Sect.

 

Day1: Arrive in Lhasa

Arrive Lhasa, meet at the airport our tour guide and driver, then driver to Lhasa city transfer to hotel, afternoon for acclimate take rest in the hotel.

 

Day2: Sightseeing in Lhasa city

Begin a visit of Lhasa city. Visit the Potala Palace in the morning, the Potala was first as the residence of the Dalai Lama and his large staff. In the afternoon, visit the Jokhang Temple, it's one of Tibet's holiest shrines, originally built in 647 A.D. in celebration of the marriage of the Tang Princess Wencheng and the King Songtsen Gampo. The walk on the Bakhor Street, serves as a circumambulation circuit and a shopping center as well.

 

Day3: Lhasa – visit Big Three Monasteries and Norbulinka

Continue the visit in Lhasa. Visit the Drepung Monastery, Ganden Monastery and Sera Monastery, these three monasteries are collectively called as Big Three Monasteries. The monastery was founded in 1416 by a disciple of Tsong Khapa under the patronage of a noble family and later enlarged by the 5th Dalai Lama, who took charge of the power over major religious and political issues in Tibet. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th Dalai Lama once stayed here. Then visit Norbulinka, in Tibetan means beautiful garden, it is the annual vacation home for the 7th to the 14th Dalai Lama.

 

Day4: Lhasa – Drigung

Set out and go to the Maozhokunggar county located in the east of Tibet in the morning , here once was the biggest population accumulation area of Tibet in Yuan Dynasty and once was called as Drigung district. Visit the Drigung monastery, is a notable monastery in Tibet, known for performing sky burials. The monastery is named after its location in a valley about 150 km east from Lhasa, in Drigung district, and is the mother monastery of the Drigung Kagyu (Drikung Kargyu) tradition. It was founded in 1179 by the founder of that tradition. The tradition emphasizes on its founders tantric meditation and Phowa practices. Overnight in Guesthouse.

 

 

Day5: Drigung-Terdrom

Transfer for Terdrom in the morning, located at the valley to the north of Drigung Monastery, Terdrom is the famous meditation place for nuns. By the temple is the Terdrom Hotspring, which is believed to be curative to many diseases. Overnight in Guesthouse.

 

Day6: Terdrom-Reting

Leave Terdrom for Reting located within the territory of Puduoqu area of Linzhou County. Reting Monastery is the ancestor temple of the Kadam Sect, which had the origin from Atisha and was formally established by Atisha’s disciple, Drom Tonpa. After Atisha’s death,Drom Tonpa inherited the noted monk’s teaching role and preached Buddhism at Reting and had the Reting Monastery built there in 1056. Using the monastery as his base, he gradually brought the Kadam Sect into being. The temple is located at the mountainside. Nearby are ancient cypresses and rolling brooks. Overnight in Guesthouse.

 

Day7: Reting-Nam Tso Lake

In the morning drive on rugged road before reach the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Pass by Damxung town along the newly paved way and set up camp at Tashi Dorie peninsula. Being the second largest saltwater lake in China only after Qinghai Lake, Namtso Lake is the biggest lake throughout Tibet. Meanwhile, it is the highest altitude saltwater lake in the world. The water here is a storybook crystal-clear blue. Overnight in Guesthouse.

 

Day8: NamTso Lake-Tsurpu-Lhassa  

In the morning take a walk by the lake and then drive toward Tsurpu Monastery along the Qinghai-Tibet highway. The Tsurpu Monastery was founded in 1189 by the First Kar-ma-pa. It was rebuilt in 1263 by the Second Kar-ma-pa, Karma Pakshi. It is the main monastery of the Karma Kamtsang Ka-gyu Tradition, which is one of the four major Dagpo Ka-gyu lineages deriving from direct disciples of Gampopa (1079-1153). Tsurpu has been the traditional seat of the line of Kar-ma-pas. It lies to the northwest of Lhasa at Tolung. After the visit drive back to Lhasa.

 

Day9: Lhasa-Tsetang

Drive 200km to Tsetang, the birthplace of earliest Tibetans, sits on the south bank in the middle section of the Yarlung Tsangbo River with a moderate climate at an altitude of 3,600 meters. On the way visit Mindroling Monastery, this monastery was built in the end of 10th centery, in 1676 was almost destroyed by fire, rebuilt in 1720, in history, although the Fifth Dalhai Lhama was the top of Gelu pa sect, in some time, he belived in the teachings of Ningmapa sect.

 

Day10: Tsetang

Visit Densatil Monastery and the Tibet King’s Mausoleum. The Densatil Monastery situated at the present-day Shangri County, is the earliest monastery of Phagdru Kagyu. In 1158, Dorjegyebu, an eminent monk of Kagyu who was a disciple of Dakpo Lhaje, had this monastery built and used it as his base to gather disciples and preach sermons. The King’s Mausoleum is a group of tombs of the Tibetan Kings from the 7th to 9th century. With an area of 10,000 square meters, it is the biggest mausoleum preserved in Tibet. All the toms are 10 meters higher than the ground and look like small hills from a far view.

 

Day11: Tsetang

Visit Samye Monastery 40km west to Tsetang. The temple was built by the Trisong Detsen (reigned 742-798) of the Tubo Kingdom and was presided over by the Buddhist master Padmasambhava. The Detsen contributed a lot to the project. First, it was said the name (meaning surprise in Tibetan) originated from an exclamation he made. When the temple was completed, Detsen took part in the foundation ceremony and then ordained seven descendants of blue blood to cultivate in the temple. They became the first group of monks to live at the temple and later the so-called 'Seven Enlighten Disciples of Samye'. Since then, Buddhism had become widespread within Tibet and forms a branch of splendid culture.

 

Day12: Tsetang-Gyantse

Leave Tsetang for Gyantse along the Kyichu River. Cross over the Gampa La, where view the holy lake Yamdrol Tso, one of the three holy lakes in Tibet and the largest habitat of water fowls in south Tibet. Hike around the lake and visit Samding Monastery, which has a history of over one thousand years and presided by the only female Living Buddha. Then drive to Gyantse, visit Kumbum Monastery, founded in 1583 by the Third Dalai Lama, "Kumbum" means 100,000 enlightening bodies of the Buddha. Kumbum has four monastic colleges, at present, there are 400 monks, the majority of the Kumbum monks have been Tibetans from Amdo. The Kumbum monastery is brief indeed a repository of Tibetan culture and art whit various sculptures, statues and religious artifacts.

 

Day13: Gyantse-Shigatse

Driver 1-2 hours to Shigatse (altitude of 3881m), the second largest city of Tibet, also an important monastery town. Visit Shalu monastery on the way, the Monastery was built in the year 1000, its architecture with a feature of completely Chinese Yuan Dynasty's temple, mixed feature of Tibetan and Han.

 

Day14: Shigatse

Visit Tashilungpo Monastery, it is the biggest Gelupa monastery in the Tsang region of Tibet. It was formerly built in 1447 and continuously expanded by the successive Panchen Lamas. The most amazing image in this monastery is the statue of the giant Maitreya (Future Buddha), stands 26 meters in height and 275 Kg of solid gold.

 

Day15: Shigatse-Lhasa

Driver 273 Km, about 4-5 hours for return to Lhasa.

 

Day16: Leave Lhasa

Check out of the hotel and transfer to airport and flight to home.
