CUT004-1: Silk Road

 

Introduction:

The Silk Road is an extensive interconnected network of trade routes across the Asian continent connecting East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean world, as well as North and Northeast Africa and Europe.

The Silk Road gets its name from the lucrative Chinese silk trade which begun during the Han Dynasty, the major reason for the connection of trade routes into an extensive trans-continental network. In recent years, the Silk Road is again being used for the maritime and overland routes.

This tour begin from Beijing, via Xi’an, Dunhuang, Turpan and Kashgar, and finally a two-day walk around the Karakuli lake, where the cultures of East and West meet, will take you to the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, a local family visit in Turpan, the famous Sunday Bazaar in Kashgar and more...

 

Day1: Arrive in Beijing

Arrive in Beijing, visit Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City. Then we can climb up the Jingshan Hill to have a panorama of Forbidden City, if time permited.

 

Day2: Trek on the Great Wall

Drive 3 hours to Jinshanling Great Wall. Trekking to the Simatai Great Wall to enjoy the long history of the rise and fall of the Great Wall during four hours’ trek. Drive back to Beijing.

 

Day3: Fly to Xi’an

Visit the temple of heaven. Then fly to Xi’an, visit the Wildgoose Pagoda, and visit the Grand Mosque.

 

Day4: Visit in Xi’an

Visit the Terrocoter Army museum. Afternoon, visit Shanxi provincial History Museum – the second largest one in China.

 

Day5: Fly to Dunhuang

Fly to Dunhuang, an oasis on the Gobi Desert. Visit the Crescen Moon Lake surrounded by the Singing Sand Dues.

 

Day6: Mogaoku Caves – Train ti Turpan

Visit the Mogaoku Buddhist Caves. The monks had excavated thousands of caves from the 4th-14th century. Afternoon take a train to Turpan. Overnight on the train.

 

Day7: Sightseeing in Turpan

Arrive in Turpan. Turpan is the lowest city in China and the second in the world. Turpan used to be an important town on the Old Silk Road. The town has a special underground irrigation system. Afternoon visit Emin Minaret and the ancient city of Jiaohe, the city was built on a small island with two rivers running around, this provided an ideal natural defensive to the city.

 

Day8: Turpan – Urumqi – Kashgar

Morning visit the ancient city of Gaochang, once the most prosperous town in the 7th and 8th century. Flaming Mountains, the legend said that it was in fire. Beaklike Buddha Caves symbolize the culture and religion on the Silk Road. Visit the ancient irrigation system-Karez, the systems are very delicate irrigation systems made up of vertical wells. Afternoon, drive to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang (180km). Visit the Red Hill Park – the symbol of the city. Evening fly to Kashgar. Kashgar is located in the west of the Taklamagan Desert, here lives a Uygur nationality group.

 

Day9: Kashgar city

Morning visit the Abakh hoja Tomb. It’s an Islamic architecture. Visit Sunday Bazaar, which might be the largest one in Asia. Afternoon visit the Great Mosque, the biggest ont in China.

 

Day10: Karakuli Lake

Leave Kashgar, by bus on Karakoram High way, 200km to Karakuli Lake. On the way, the first mountains we see is the Konggur Mountains and the second one is the Muztag Ata Mountains. We stay overnight in the yurt, where the Girgiz people stay in their summer pastureland.

 

Day11: Kalakuli Lake – Trek

After breakfast, trek on the side of the lake. After crossing a stream, walking downhill into a beautiful vallry, and then walking up to the ridge of a hill, we arrive at Subash Village. Have a picnic on the way. After 5 hours walk, we come back to the Yurts. Overnight in the yurt.

 

Day12: Karakuli – Trek

After the breakfast, trek 4 hours to Jumblak glacier. After the photo time on the glacier, come back to yurt.

 

Day13: Leave the lake – flight to Urumqi - Beijing

Our bus comes early to the yurts in the morning. After breakfast, dirve to Kashagr, on later morning flight o Urumqi and then f

 

Day14: Depart

Check out of hotel, transfer to airport to catch flight to home.
